BEN & PANIA - Contemporary
Choreographer: Marko Panzic
Song: "Talk Like That" - The Presets
What a great way to kick off the show for 2009! Really good energy! It was a really kooky concept, but I loved it! Marko rules lol! The Courier Mail today said it was an "insane" interpretation of a Presets number. I really loved the synchornised floorwork. really cool. I didn't like the end when they were staring at the light... stoopid.
I don't really like Pania... but she might grow on me... I REALLY like BEN! probably only cuz he's a QUEENSLANDER!! hahah. Interesting note -- Ben and Matt Lee were Chorus members together in The Boy From Oz with Hugh Jackman! (which was choreographed by Kenny Ortega and Kelly Abbey!)
EMMANUEL & TALIA - Cha Cha
Choreographer: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Hound Dog" - Smokey Joe's Cafe
Ok.. I really wanted to like this.. I mean, come on- a Jason Gilkison Cha Cha? with Talia, probably the most technically perfect dancer the competition has seen?? gotta be awesome, right? but somehow,, it wasn't.. I just didn't like it. The start was stupid.. i was like ok start dancing already, and I kept getting distracted by Talia's costume.. she had too much on I thought. I'm sorry. I REALLY like Talia though, she is so good, (well she has to be - Queensland Ballet much?) but its no secret i don't like Emman.. cocky B-Boys annoy me. So I'm just gonna comeout and say I hope emmanuel goes and Talia gets a new partner next week :)
TIMOMATIC & LAMB - Lyrical
Choreographer: Travers Ross
Song: "Rainbow" - Elisa
Hold up!!! WTF are their names???? ok seriously,, wats wrong with just calling you tim? Timomatic is just SToopid (cocky b-boy much?? haha bet you can guess i don't like him) and lamb?? come on... i'm sure you have a real name and i'm SURE its probably a better name than lamb. Ok that rant is over now.. the dance... was good. I can't really think of much else to say.. their unison could have been a bit better, but other than that was alright. I agree with Jason when he said it was a bit more hip-hoppy. I thought there was a lot of popping and i was like .. popping? lyrical? ok...... And it is at this point i will point out i HATE when they end dances and they just fade the music out... so friggin dumb. so second-rate i think.. don't they have sound engineers or something that can end the song a bit nicer than just a fade-out?? i mean, come on i think a seven-year-old could do a fade-out.... pick up your act, network 10!
DAMIEN & AMY - Broadway
Choreographer: Adam Williams
Song: "Puttin' on the Ritz" - Rufus Wainwright
I nearly died when Damien uttered the words "What is Broadway?" ....... :- ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? WHAT IS BROADWAY???? leave... now... just leave.. ughhh.. and i still can't believe he is 18... no way is he 18?!?!?! ok the dance -- well it is my favourite genre.. so OF COURSE i'm going to L O V E it. and i did. very sassy. good. Amy is EXCELLENT! she is one to watch. she is so good. her costume was SICK! loved it! Damien did a good job. better than i expected to be honest. and the jive kicks - LOVED IT!! (I love jive kicks - don't know if they're actually called that.. but thats what they are)
STEPHEN & ASH-LEIGH - Rumba
Choreographer: Sandro Catalano
Song: "My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion
I don't care what you say,,,, this was NOT a rumba. This was too ambitious for week one. Shame on you, sandro. They danced it beautifully, but they are not gonna get votes because of the choreography!! again, shame on you, sandro. This dance would have been so good if it was later in the comp when they knew eachother better and had a connection. but not first dance together, no way. (side note -- how STUPID was the kiss??? so forced!! i hated it! was anyone else thinking,, ash-leigh's fiance was in the top 40 much?)
CHARLIE & PENNY - Hip Hop
Choreographer: Tiana Joubert
Song: "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" - Beyoncé
OH MY GOD!! HOW GOOD WERE THEY!?!?!??!!? BEST DANCE OF THE NIGHT!!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!! IT WAS HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!! so much energy!! so good!! the unison was like SPOT-ON!
And now lets talk about how much I LOVE these two... first of all I LOVE what I now call Penny's "ugly-face" not that she has an ugly face, just her face she makes when she's excited is sooo adorably-ugly!! i LOVE IT! and "embrace the Penny" was the best line!! Believe me, I am embracing the Penny!! and how funny is Charlie.... i was in hysterics when he was doing the beyonce dance and he said he needed a cold shower!! Seriously I love these two.. straight to the top of my list. standout faves. FIVE STARS!
DANNY & KAT - Lyrical
Choreographer: Debbie Ellis
Song: "Llorando (Crying)" - Angelo Badalamenti
How beautiful. Danny is my favourite male dancer in the comp. He is an AMAZING technical dancer. Kat is alright. She is lucky to have Danny for a partner.. he will carry her through, I think. Their lifts were seamless, the unison was perfect.. I actually can't fault this routine..
Ok.. now.. before the ad-break before they performed when they show the couple.. did anyone else think it was awkward and that the camera was intruding on some private serious moment? they were hugging and had serious faces on.. made me feel awkward.
And... when Jason told Kat how she is so mature, etc... her reaction to that couldn't have been any more immature!! i was like uhhh... ok..
JESSE & MAX - Contemporary
Choreographer: Shaun Parker
Song: "Kids" - MGMT
First of all I would like to say "AARRGHH" at Jesse's forehead.. I believe it to be from another planet, and it scares me. That is all. oh god this dance was horrible. I liked Max in the top100 week, but now, she has disappointed me. This was so sloppy!! the lifts were heinous!! somebody needs to teach max how to be graceful!
BJ & GIANNE - Quickstep
Choreographer: Leeanne Bampton
Song: "Sparkling Diamonds" - Moulin Rouge! Soundtrack
I loved this dance instantly! The snake is one of my FAVOURITE lifts! and Sparkling Diamonds is such a good quickstep song! The footwork was soo good. The last lift was just horrible though.. but if you look around it, it was a GREAT piece. (i actually didn't realise that BJ had tassels literally wrapped around his head, until i watched it a second time! - poor guy.. I wondered why his hair was messed up for judging)
I love Gianne! (again-- QLDer!!!) she always makes me smile! she's one of those people that lights up a room! and everybody knows I didn't like BJ... but he impressed me!! I think he might be growing on me! those jumps he did at the beginning were good! and his actual quickstepping was really good too! So BJ has moved up on my list
LOREDO & CHANELLE - Jazz
Choreographer: Project Moda
Song: "Poker Face" - Lady Gaga
First of all, can I say how glad I am that nobody mentioned chanelle's scoliosis!! I'm sick of hearing about it, and I think she would be too! There is more to her than her disability! She's a great dancer! But omg poor Loredo. I cringed when i saw him hit his head.. poor boy. but good on him for doing the dance. I think the "Slinky" would have been cool,, but the dance was great without it! I can't even tell where the slinky would have been?? But yes, I loved the concept of the dance. I LOVE project moda!! they are cool!!
side-note: HAHA at chanelle's faces she pulls all throughout the dane. classic!
SO THIS WEEK MY VOTES WENT TO:-
Charlie & Penny
Danny & Kat
BJ & Gianne

Okay I'll go from the top:
Ben and Pania - Agree with pretty much everything you said, but I like Pania - she seems very versatile :)
Emmanuel and Talia - I love Emmanuel! He's such a character...and he's from Orange. lol. I agree with what Jason said (I think it was him) Emmanuel was obviously wayyy out of his comfort zone, but his ability to be the character made up for that. And Talia is technically amazing :) her package beforehand made her seem like a bit of a stripper though.
Timomatic and Lamb - 2 very talented dancers. I liked the idea behind the routine. Eh, Nicole/Lamb, which one would you choose :P
Damien and Amy - Agree once again - I love Amy, she's amazing. I still can't believe Damien didn't know what broadway was, has he been living under a rock?? lol. that aside - I enjoyed this routine - I love Puttin' On The Ritz. You could tell Damien was struggling in places though. Not my favourite, but definitely enjoyable =]
Stephen and Ash-Leigh - okay this was painful to watch. From start to finish it hurt. And yes wtf with the kiss.
Charlie and Penny - 3 words
"EMBRACE THE PENNY"
I love them both!!!!!!!!!!!! amazingly hot routine - tiana joubert did an outstanding piece of chore. These two are front runners for sure!!
Danny and Kat - awesome dance - i was too distracted by the music though.
Jesse and Max - Okay, i like jesse, but I just can't stand max. Don't know what it is, but i can't. her work was sloppy, agreeing with Jason Coleman on this one.
BJ and Gianne - this was just a fun routine :) it was nice, light and happy.
Loredo and Chanelle - I didn't really see much of Loredo in the auditions, I didn't pay much attention - but he was really impressive. Project Moda had amazing chore with a really quirky idea that I really enjoyed. And yes - totally agree about Chanelle's scoliosis!! I was waiting for them to show the same picture in her package.
...geez brendan, i should have just written my own blog =P
love you :)
I'll just do what Sarah did, and go from the top too.
Ben & Pania:
I enjoyed the dance, but it wasn't surpremely excellent show stopping, which I was hoping for when I saw the package at the beginning. I think Ben is fabulous though.
Emmanuel & Talia:
I. Love. Talia. Perhaps it's my biased ballet routes coming out, but she's beautiful! When I saw she was partnered with the B-Boy I was kinda "oh noez" for her. But it went much better than I thought it would.
Timo & Lamb:
There is actually a girl in our course who is called Lamb... well, it's her last name, but we call her that anyway. I don't really remember this one much. I just remember I saw it and went "hellz no that is NOT lyrical" it was most definately some form of hip hop if you ask my opinion.
Damien & Amy:
I laughed when he said he didn't know what Broadway was, thinking it was a joke, and then when he was serious a little "WTF MAN" bulb blew in my head. How can you be a dancer and not know about Broadway?! But then, he is ballroom, so. The dance was mediocre I thought. But then, I was too busy enjoying the song to really pay attention. Jive kicks are the way to a girl's heart though.... ah, Jive, how I love immitating thee.
There's something that irritates me about Amy, but I can't figure out what.
Stephen & Ash-Leigh:
Crap. Let's move on.
Actually it wasn't completely horrid. It just wasn't good. The horrid came later...
And there is something about Stephen that I find INCREDIBLY irritating... It could just be the confidence factor. But he's a decent dancer, so I'll see if he grows on me.
Charlie & Penny:
Charlie is officially my Jack for this year I think. Although no one could ever pass Jack in awesome standards. But when he did the arm over the head! I didn't notice until halfway through, saw it and screamed! IT WAS BRILLIANT!
They just had so much energy and it was lovely. Definately my favourite of the night.
Danny & Kat:
I liked this one, but I think it was one of those dances which you just had to see live, otherwise you don't get the energy the room is charged with. Plus, I was busy singing the David Hobson english cover of the song to notice bits =D
It was nice though.
Jesse & Max:
It was so bad, it hurts to even think about it now. Which is a real shame as they were two of my favourites going in, and Max bombed it for them.
BJ & Gianne:
I didn't like BJ last season, but this season he's growing on me. I think of him a little like I thought of Danny from the American SYTYCD. He's really quiet at times, but he's incredibly funny given the chance. Plus, there is a maturity in his dancing that I like. But then, maybe it is too early to tell.
Gianne is fun =D She's got a contagious smile. In fact, the quickstep was one of my favourites =D
Loredo & Chanelle:
Firstly, I think the Slinky on the part of the choreographer was a disaster waiting to happen. It's a move that needs participants to be the same height, and Loredo has to be a full head higher than Chanelle. But, like you said, I couldn't even tell where it was supposed to go, so they covered it well.
Loredo was another one of my favourites going in, and I thought he lived up to it on his first week. Plus, crazy carny dances are favourites of mine =D
The End.
I TOTALLY FORGOT SOMETHING ELSE!!!!one!
What was up with costuming?! Whoever was doing the male costumes was clearly not on the same page as the females.
Case One: Charlie and Penny
Charlie's outfit, very fitting for a vampire. Absolutely brillaint. Penny's outfit was more like a cross between a lionlady and Lara Croft. Her costume looked like it belonged to a completely different show.
Case Two: Stephen and Ash-Leigh
Stephen's shirt was HORRID. Especially the fact that it was tan in comparison to Ash-Leigh's beautiful white gown. Yuck yuck yuck.
But then again, they had some nice ones. I thought Max and Jesse's outfits were good, and Loredo and Chanelle's was awesome.
Thoughts? Opinions? Also, officially decided I'll do my own post for next week's rather than taking up all your comment space.
Hey Brendan.
This is such a good idea for a blog!
Pania irked me in her and Ben's routine. I'm too picky.
Talia is the best dancer in the competition. The judges will keep her in even if Emmanuel brings her into the bottom 3.
I liked Timomatic and Lamb's dance but hated how Bonnie was asking them if anything was going on between them. Bonnie irritates me in general.
In regards to the music fading out; I hate it too, but not all songs have a place were it makes sense to end. I don't think it's up to channel 10's sound people - the choreographer's people maybe? Plus some of the greatest dances on the show (American and Australian) have had fade outs. eg. Jason Gilkinson's Waltz with Rhys and Gemma.
I love Amy but "Puttin' on the Ritz" is a bit old (reason they were in bottom 3 maybe?)
Hate Ashleigh. Stephen is a strong dancer. The dance was heinous. As was the kiss.
Charlie and Penny killed it but I just wished it wasn't vampire themed. I did feel like the song was wasted on it. Sorry!
Danny and Kat were great. Although she still reminds me of Rhiannon. I agree about that awkward intruding moment before ad-break.
BJ is growing on me.
I thought Loredo and Chanelle were really good, both strong dancers.
I can't wait for your next blog Brendan. I sure as hell won't be doing my own. It's your idea, you keep it. haha.
Hey, cool blog.
Damien is my dance teacher and he told me that when he said whats broadway he was asking amy what a quick move is that they can go "ohhhh broadway!"
but the editing made him look stupid.
later in the series he tried to clear it up in an interview but they cut it out.
hope that helps :)
